So, it seems I have a secret.
I’ve volunteered to be the Secret Reader at Mikayla’s kindergarten class this Friday. The very first one! Good news for that, because I’m the first Secret Reader, I don’t have to follow some stupendous mom-reader who reads 16 books to her kids every night. Bad news is I don’t know exactly what to expect.
But, since I’m up at the school helping in Kayla’s class once a week anyway, I know the kids, I know the teacher and I know the classroom…oh, and I know to get the yellow not-an-intruder badge on the way in to the school…so it’s no sweat.
And I was crafty smart.
I’m reading two of the Jillian Jiggs books by Phoebe Gilman…one I know by heart.
Probably, you’ve never heard of these books because I found the first one when my girls were little and we wore the cover off of it. In the interim years, that copy disappeared somewhere. But when Mikayla was ready for it, I search everywhere and found the Jillian Jiggs book AND another one that is entitled The Wonderful Pigs of Jillain Jiggs (seems there are about four) on Amazon. So I bought those two. They tend to be the books of choice many times when Kayla’s over here…they’re fun books.
Here’s an excerpt of the Jillian Jiggs book…
“A long time ago, when she was quite small
Jillian Jiggs wore nothing at all.
‘Those were the days,’ her mother would sigh
As she looked round the room and started to cry.
For Jillian Jiggs liked to dress up and play
And this made a mess of her room every day.
‘Jillain, Jillain, Jillain Jiggs!
It looks like your room has been lived in by pigs!’ “
(And, yes, I typed all of that from memory, that’s how many times I’ve read these books.)
So the other part of this is that Secret Readers are given permission to dress up. So I found a pig mask on the internet, printed it out, cut it out and I’m wearing it to kindergarten. THAT ought to get a few looks! Luckily, I’ll have my this-pig-is-not-an-intruder badge!
So I’ll let you know how it goes. Think they’ll guess who it is behind that pig mask?

You will be the best Secret Reader EVER — including going forward! What fun! I’ve never heard of the Jillian Jiggs books. I’ll have to look for them.

Ha! We’ll see. It helps that I’ve picked a book that I can practically act out, much less just read.

Got my pig mask, my books and my teacher voice and I’m off to Kindergarten again. I’ll let you know if they recognized me. Ha! Since I was there this morning again, don’t think I’m gonna be fooling anyone.
