Sealed With A Kiss

So I was in Target today.

I heart Target.  I think I’ve left there once empty-handed.  And that was probably the time I ended up back there buying what I was looking for anyway because I didn’t find it better or cheaper anywhere else.

But anyway, I was in the infamous “Dollar Section” right at the front of the store.  You know the one that has all the cool stuff you can’t walk by?  Even if you don’t buy something, you have to sift through it all?

And I saw these adorable little metal mailboxes!

I picked one up, opened it, turned it around and around, put the flag up, put the flag down, smiled and thought “that’s really cute” and returned it to it’s bin.

Then I saw the pink hair bows with the red heart sparklies.

And the heart socks.

And the purple bracelet with the big satin bow.

And the Barbie necklace.

And the stampers.

And my gramma brain began to whirl.

I got an idea to put Mikayla and her coming-soon sister’s names on the side of the cute little mailboxes.  Then when they come to visit, they could check the mailbox.  If the flag is up, there’s a treat inside.  If the flag is down, they have to wait for another time (like that’s gonna happen!)

Each time they visit, I can put something from that Dollar Section at Target in the box and I’ll be The-Best-Gramma-That-Ever-Set-Foot-On-The-Earth!  (Besides, I’m gonna buy something from that section every time I’m there anyway…why not put it to good use?!?)

Then I thought…”That little mailbox isn’t so big.  What if I want to put something in there that’s bigger?”

And it came to me!  TREASURE HUNT!!  I could put the first clue of a treasure hunt in the mailbox.

Did you do treasure hunts when you were a kid?   We did them all the time.  I remember for my about 11th birthday (eons and eons ago when the earth was cooling), my mom and dad did a treasure hunt for my birthday.  It was all around the neighborhood.  And we ended up back at the dryer.  I don’t remember today what that gift was, but I remember running around the neighborhood with my siblings and friends chasing after me and ending up at the dryer…right there in the laundry room…that was right next to the room the party was being held in.

My mom.  She’s a tricky devil.  Got 10 eleven year olds out of the house for a while, didn’t it?

Anyway, back to the mailboxes…

So I found these cool stickers in the stationary department for .99 per sheet.  Sweet!

When I got home, I sat down in front of the Duraflame log that is burning like hell that has grocery store wood piled all around it that seems to be made from metal cause it ain’t burning worth a piddly-damn fire and started sticking letters and flowers all over the little mailboxes.

Here’s the finished product.

Yes, I am pretty damn proud of myself, thank-you-very-much-indeed!

What a fantastic idea! You *should* be proud of yourself. I so envy you for having your grandchildren near you. I would love to steal your idea and create such mailbox for Bubby. (Maybe my two other daughters will have grandbabies sometime in the semi-near future … and not move away. Of course, they need at least a boyfriend, if not a husband, and those don’t seem to be anywhere on the horizon at this point.)

Have fun with the mailboxes o’ love!

Thanks! And I feel VERY lucky to have them this close.

One thing I was thinking of though…as Bubby gets a little older, it might be possible to do this via webcam….Let Megan have the mailbox with the understanding that it is the Gramma Mailbox O’ Love (LOVE that name!), send her stuff to put in it and then have him open it while you’re on the webcam with him.

I think I had as much fun making them as Mikayla will have opening them!

Yeah, why didn’t I think to call them Mailboxes O’ Love?
